The homeowners in the beautiful village in North Gloucestershire had a goal of improving their carbon footprint and reducing their energy bills by installing a solar energy system and an air-to-air heat pump heating and cooling system. The project would cover a large 5-bedroom detached property and required careful planning to ensure cost-effectiveness and efficiency.
The installation process involved a team of experts working together to fit solar panels on the rooftop and connect them to the heating and cooling system. With the air-to-air heat pump, the property now had the capacity to heat and cool even the largest rooms. This project had the added benefit of utilising renewable energy resources.
The project is still under way but the desired result is an environmentally friendly home that is energy-efficient but also hugely cost efficient with the majority of the energy being sourced from solar.
Two Panasonic external air-to-air heat pump units were installed, one at the side of the house and one at the rear. These use an environmentally friendly refrigerant called R32.
The installation process involved fitting the heat pumps on external walls, which meant running refrigerant pipes and electrical cables through the property to connect to the indoor units. These units were installed in the main living areas and bedrooms to distribute both cold and warm air throughout the property.
The Panasonic air-to-air heat pumps are energy-efficient, providing cost-effective heating during the winter months. They also have a cooling function, making them extremely beneficial in the summer to keep the property at a comfortable temperature.
4 indoor wall mounted units were installed, 2 downstairs and 2 upstairs. For the open plan downstairs kitchen and lounge area, a Panasonic floor console was installed. Floor consoles are very unobtrusive by design so it’s fairly easy to find a suitable place where they can blend in.
Because the system was installed as part of a major renovation, the installation was very straightforward.
2 external units were installed – one on the right hand side wall on one to the rear of the property. The rear unit fed into 3 internal units, 2 downstairs and one upstairs. The side unit fed the unit in the large upstairs bedroom situated on the same side of the house, and the downstairs floor console. This allowed for minimal impact from the required pipework during installation.
This project included the installation of ?? JA Solar roof panels, a GivEnergy home battery storage system and a Mixergy smart and connected hot water tank.
It’s been suggested by the manufacturer that the hot water tank is capable of reducing water bills by up to 40% through volumetric heating, a process that reduces wastage by only heating the water you need. It can also be controlled via an app supplied by the manufacturer and is a lot faster than a standard boiler at heating your water. To find out more, click here.
With the battery storage system, any electricity generated by the solar panels that isn’t used and cannot be stored is sold back to the grid, meaning further overall savings. To find out more about the storage system, click here.
The entire system was installed without any problems in just under 7 hours.”
The installation team answered all of our questions and provided helpful tips for optimal performance and maintenance. We can't feedback on the winter performance just yet, but the air conditioning is fully functional and during a long awaited mini heatwave recently, I've got to say I was very impressed at the time it took to cool our very large downstairs area.
Set up was really easy - you connect to the WiFi and Comfort Cloud App using a QR code.
Performance wise for cooling is fantastic. We've been asked if we can feed back once the project is complete which we're more than happy to do so.
Paul, Homeowner
This renovation is still in progress but we will be back to see how the overall system copes with heating a large, open property throughout the winter.
